hey guys, my name is mel, and all though ive been watching this comm for a while, this is my first post.
today i decided to make potato soup from stuff i had and it turned out pretty darn delicious! heres what i did:

-2 lbs baby red potatoes, cubed with the peel left on.
-2 cups baby carrots, sliced into rounds
-1 med red onion, chopped
-aprox. 15 garlic cloves crushed, then roughly chopped
-1 1/2 - 2 cups sliced mushrooms
-1 tsp salt
-3 cups chicken stock
*i boil a TB spoon of bacon grease in with the stock for extra flavor.

i combined all this with about an extra half cup of water and put on low for 7 hours (while at work).
afterwards i added:

-1 TB black pepper
-1 cup half and half
-about 1/3 cup instant potatoes (if you like it on the thicker side like me).
-1/2 cup milk

cook on low for about another 15mins, stir once.
then i added about 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese slowly stirring in as it melted.

i topped with sliced green onion and more shredded cheese.

i meant to take a picture, but everyone devoured their bowls before i got the camera out!

enjoy!!

I just made my favorite meal EVER in the crockpot. I want to eat it everyday for the rest of my life! I love it so much I kind of don't want to share the leftovers with my boyfriend tomorrow night because he eats like a wildebeest and that will leave less for me...

I work in a restaurant and we have a jalapeno cilantro sauce that I call "crack sauce". The chef refuses to give me the exact recipe because he knows I'm addicted and I think he likes to hear me beg. I have however somehow cajoled the ingredient list from him but he's still holding onto the measurement info. So I'm sorry if the recipe isn't very detailed- I don't know the exact amounts myself!

Turkey leg soup?

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 4:52 PM
So I've got a couple turkey legs in the freezer, and am looking for a recipe for turkey leg soup. Anyone have one?

Also, I just realized that in about 12 days, there will probably be a ton more people looking for leftover turkey recipes... so if you guys know of anything brilliant and delicious to do with turkey leftovers in the crock pot... let me know!! I'm a beginner and love the ideas everyone here has...

D'oh! It's all about the timing

Ok, so I never use my crock pot on high, but I didn't hear my alarm this morning and slept through when I was supposed to put in the pork roast to make pulled pork.
Recipe is for 12hrs on slow. Does that mean 6 hrs on high?

Please and thank yous all around!

hemming pants to be let out later?

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 7:17 PM
Howdy folks :)

I'm looking for a relatively easy way to hem my son's pants while giving me the option to lengthen them back out again as he grows. They're currently about ten inches too long, lol. But I know he'll keep growing up and not so much out, so I want to make them useable for as long as possible without making him wear floods as he grows :) The way I hem my own pants won't work for letting them back out later on.

Thoughts?

Thanks so much!

fats need dates too!

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 10:36 PM
so i know that this is not fatshion related really, but i trust you fatties more than anyone else to give me good advice, and... perhaps some other people are interested in my question and have not had the chutzpah to ask.

has anyone had any experience with online dating? i know... i know... I KNOW. its online dating, but i'm SERIOUSLY lonely right now, and i have some (skinny) friends who have met a few great guys online and have been having a lot of fun. are there sites that cater to fats looking for dates? i guess if anyone has any general advice in this area... let me know!

thanks all, and love love love.

water soluble.

hey guys, my name is mel, and this is my first time posting.
i am part of an art collective and we are planning a party/art installation/fund raiser for feb, and i wanted to make some stencils to put around town to create a hype. my problem is i want to use something water soluble that comes off easily as to not associate our group with vandalism or gang activity. since this group is about 10 ppl i dont want to step on anyones toes by doing anything they would consider "rude" or what have you.
i was thinking of using charcoal, ive heard of using charcoal powder in a airbrush device, has anyone heard of anything like this?? let me know what you guys think, thanks a lot.

I'm really lucky to live near a community center with an open pottery lab. Here are some of the pots I've made recently.

Green Bowl

I like how the colors came out on this one. The blue sorta sneaks around inside the green.

The others did not come out as well. I think there was something wrong with the white glaze that day.

I'm still looking for a few more doll pictures for my forthcoming YouTube Vitas video http://community.livejournal.com/thrifthorror/295004.html
A big thank you to those who have already contributed pictures, who will of course be credited. Contributions don't have to be new - archive thrifthorror photos are equally welcome.

This one's probably the best candidate since she's a bona fide speaking doll. Her catchphrases include "I love you Mommy!" and "Read me a story please!" Perhaps the most disturbing thing is that if I found a version of her dress in my size I'd wear it...

On Friday it was the 13th, and I went to a club night where you either had to come as a vampire or a zombie, with some stage acts related to various films of the genre. I had a silver heatproof tablecloth hanging about, and decided to go as a zombie astronaut (my boyfriend went as a zombie hick)

I used a 1960s dress pattern for a simple shift dress, easy to get on without fastenings, and without too many seams to weaken the foil.

Christmas presents

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 1:35 PM
Every year my one friend rotates her Christmas decorations between a Snowman Christmas, Santa Christmas, and Penguin Christmas. She has a lot of time on her hands, lol. This year is a Snowman Christmas, so for her birthday in October I made her the snowman off of the Lion Brand website.

For Christmas I decided to make her the penguin and santa off of the Lion website, too, so she has a complete set.

Now I just have to wait to give them to her. That's the hardest part, lol!

Ridiculous or fabulous? Also in red and black. If the heels were lower (or sturdier), I might be more tempted...

A few weeks ago, I bought some very ugly, dirty chairs from the Salvation Army with the intention of putting them in my small-ish kitchen. They were $12 for the pair, which, frankly, I felt to be quite steep. Look how ugly and filthy! Vinyl cushions! Ew. But they were nice and sturdy, and I liked the metal frame, so I took them home to fix them up.
